Mormon Church Face Prop 8 Related Fine

Fair Political Practices Commission recommends $5,538 fine

After nearly two years, California's Fair Political Practices Commission is looking to fine the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints $5,538 for not reporting contributions to support 2008's Proposition 8 ballot measure.

Prop 8 was an attempt to enshrine a ban on marriage equality in the state's constitution.

After Prop 8 passed, Californians Against Hate co-founder Fred Karger complained to the FPPC that the church had failed to report $37,000 of dollars in non-monetary contributions -- such as donated labor -- to the Yes on 8 campaign in the run up to the election.

The church made the announcement of the proposed fine, and said that it cooperated with the investigation. The FPPC will decide on Thursday whether to adopt the fine.

Prop 8, of course, still isn't quite settled as an issue. Closing arguments in a trial to overturn the measure are imminent.

Jackson West admits it's not much, but for Prop 8 opponents, it's at least symbolically something.
