Niles Canyon Road, west of Sunol, is closed indefinitely due to storm damage, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol said.
The roadway, part of Highway 84, just east of Palomares in Alameda County closed at 5 p.m. Monday after a slipout where chunks of the road washed away along Alameda Creek, Caltrans said. Caltrans crews are expected to reassess the damage on Tuesday morning.
"It's going to take some time for our crews to make repairs, so we're just asking folks to be patient with us, to plan ahead, and if we need to implement that one-way traffic control we will do so," said Pedro Quintana, Caltrans District 4 spokesman.
The damage occurred sometime before 5 a.m. Monday, Caltrans said. Caltrans managed one-way traffic control until it a full road closure was enforced.
Alameda County Supervisor Dave Haubert surveyed the damage and said it is difficult to find out who is in charge of clearing up the creek because so many agencies are involved.

"I think we have to have a policy that says when a lot of trees fall into the river as a result of an act of God, if you will, we’ve got to clean that out and can’t just sit there" Haubert said.
Caltrans said the county and water board are tasked with clearing the creek.
