Multiple vehicles were engulfed in flames after a crash on Interstate 80 in Richmond near the San Pablo border on Friday night, officials said.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said that at around 10 p.m., they spotted a possible stolen Hummer. That's when deputies did a traffic stop as the vehicle entered eastbound I-80 at El Portal Drive.
Sheriff officials said the driver "accelerated and refused to yield, leading deputies on a pursuit." They added that the pursuit was terminated shortly after when the suspect drove in the wrong direction.
About 30 seconds after the pursuit was terminated, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office said their helicopter reported that the suspect vehicle was involved in a crash with two other cars in Richmond.
Deputies took the suspect into custody. Sheriff officials said the suspect was later booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on several charges, including felony evading, hit-and-run, vehicle theft and drug possession.
Two adults and a juvenile were in one of the vehicles that was struck by the suspect and they were taken to local hospitals, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. As of Saturday afternoon, their conditions were not known.
