Silicon Valley is extending further north -- and even has an outpost in the East Bay.

Oakland is number 11 on a new list for the "best cities for tech startups," according to Oakland North.

Oakland is an attractive spot for technology firms -- apparently, solar technology companies in particular have been centering on Jack London Square -- because of "an attractive urban vibe" and the talent created by nearby UC Berkeley.

There is also "room to grow" in the East Bay, in stark contrast to dense San Francisco, according to Joe Kennedy, CEO of East Bay-based Pandora, which just added "30,000 square feet" to its office space.

Clean tech companies are also "clustering" near Interstate 880, the news Web site reported.

Despite crime and bad public schools, there's also significant Oakland pride. So technology is now Oaklandish, too.
