Oakland police respond to 4 homicides in span of 10 hours

NBC Universal, Inc.

Four people were killed in three separate shootings in Oakland in a span of roughly 10 hours Wednesday, police said.

"Sadly, in the span of 10 hours, the city of Oakland experienced four homicides, two of which occurred in one incident," interim police Chief Darren Allison said. "At this time, we don’t believe any of these incidents are connected."

Two separate shootings early Wednesday left three people dead, according to police.

Officers responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. to reports of two people shot in the area of the 1100 block of 89th Avenue and arrived to find the two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene, Officer Rosalia Lopez said.

Then, just before 5 a.m., another homicide occurred, this one in the 1200 block of 18th Avenue, where officers found someone with a gunshot wound who succumbed to their injuries at the scene, according to police.

Shortly afterward, a second person arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds, but police did not release any other details.

At noon, police responded to another fatal shooting in the 2100 block of 106th Avenue. Officers who arrived on scene found a victim with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The names of the victims who died in the separate shootings are not yet being released, and Oakland police have not announced any arrests.

As the city tries to figure out how to cut down on the violence, Allison attempted to explain what he thinks is going on.

"Although we have seen a number of personal disputes result in gun violence recently, we know that gang and group shootings still represent a majority of the violence in the city of Oakland," he said.

Anyone with information about the homicides is asked to call the Oakland police homicide section at 510-238-3821 or the tip line at 510-238-7950.
