A pedestrian died Monday in San Jose after being struck in a hit-and-run collision, and police later tracked down the driver, who they say left the scene to seek treatment for injuries related to the crash.
At about 8:45 p.m., officers arrived in the area of Bird and Coe avenues after a man was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, police said. At the time of the collision with the pedestrian, the vehicle also struck a large tree branch that the victim was trying to clear from the roadway.
The suspect vehicle in the crash was described Tuesday as a 2019 red Chevy pickup, and the man behind the wheel told officers he was unaware he had hit a person and left the scene due to his own injuries, police said.
The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, according to police. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
It was not clear if the driver was arrested. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash, police said.
It's San Jose's 45th traffic death of the year and 18th involving a pedestrian.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after family is notified, police said.
