The principal of Pittsburg Unified School District’s adult education program allegedly shot by his wife during a domestic dispute has died, according to his family.

Paul Shatswell, 45, was shot March 16 and had been on life support since, authorities said.

Shatswell's wife, Maria Vides, now faces a murder charge. She initailly was booked into County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. Vides allegedly shot him with a handgun around 1:20 a.m. in their home on Barrie Drive in Pittsburg.

Shatswell is the father of eight children ranging in age from 5 to 29, according to the school district. He previously served as a reserve deputy sheriff for Contra Costa County, along with roles in finance, counseling and educational administration.

Vides initially was charged with attempted murder with special circumstances, and now will face murder charges, according to police.

Vides remains in custody at the Contra Costa County Main Jail in Martinez. Her original bail of $2.07 million likely will be amended.

The slaying is the city of Pittsburg’s first homicide of the year.
