Evacuation orders issued as Point Fire in Sonoma County surpasses 1,000 acres

A Cal Fire hand crew member was injured while battling the flames and taken to an area hospital

According to Cal Fire, some structures have been damaged as the blaze spread to 1,100 acres as of 6 a.m. Monday. The fire was 20% contained.

A Cal Fire hand crew member was injured while battling the flames early Monday morning, the agency said. The firefighter, said to be in his mid-to-late 20s, suffered blunt force trauma sometime after midnight and was airlifted out of the front fire lines to an ambulance that took him to an area hospital.

Winds out of the northwest and low relative humidity are "making for challenging conditions," Cal Fire said on social media. "The fire is making a hard push off of Bradford Mountain to the south," said the agency on X.

The Point Fire northwest of Healdsburg in Sonoma County has ballooned up to 1,013 acres, Cal Fire said Sunday evening.

"Hopefully, with all of the resources that we have right now – air and ground – hopefully we’re able to contain this fire sooner rather than later," Cal Fire spokesperson Erick Hernandez said.

Structures continued to be threatened along West Dry Creek Road, north of Yoakim Bridge Road, and especially on the northeast side of Bradford Mountain, according to Cal Fire.

Dubbed the Point Fire, the blaze was first reported on Skaggs Springs Road just before 1 p.m. and grew rapidly with the help of the wind, prompting evacuations in areas off West Dry Creek Road.

An evacuation order for the area was extended to include all residents in zone SON-2E2, in the Dry Creek Valley, the Sheriff's Office said at 4:15 p.m. Sunday as the fire continued to spread.

The Point Fire northwest of Healdsburg in Sonoma County has ballooned up to 550 acres, Cal Fire said Sunday evening.

Evacuation orders are in effect for north and east of Chemise Road, south of Stewart's Point-Skaggs Springs Road, and west of Dry Creek in that zone.

An evacuation warning remains in effect for zone SON-2E3, also in the Dry Creek Valley: north of Mill Creek Road, south of Chemise Road, east of Wallace Creek Road and west of Dry Creek in that zone.

Though Nikki Baxes is not in the evacuation zone, she said she's concerned for her neighbors who are.

"They’re just waiting, and they’re watching. They’re farmers," she said.

An air quality advisory has gone out due to wildfire smoke for Sonoma, Napa and Marin counties, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said.
