A suspect was arrested after an individual fired nine shots Friday night on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, in the vicinity of Sproul Plaza, a university spokesman said.

One person was arrested after nine shots were fired Friday night on the University of California, Berkeley campus, a university spokesman said.

No one was injured in the shooting, said UC Berkeley Assistant Vice Chancellor Dan Mogulof.

The shooting followed an altercation in Lower Sproul Plaza, said Janet Gilmore, the university's senior director of strategic communications.

After the dispute, one individual produced a weapon and fired into the air about 8:40 p.m., she said in a statement.

"This was a lone actor, there were no victims or additional shooters," Gilmore said.

Police were already on the way to the scene and the suspect was detained at 8:41 p.m., she said. Gilmore described him as a 59-year-old man unaffiliated with the campus.

A shelter-in-place order for the area was lifted at 9:50 p.m.

There will be additional police on campus Saturday night, Gilmore said.
