Police shot and killed a gunman who made his way onto the top of a building under construction and pointed a rifle at a San Francisco hospital, San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said late Wednesday.
The gunman, described by police to be in his late 20s, had just robbed a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in San Bruno, making off with a rifle and ammunition, according to Suhr. The suspect allegedly used a handgun to rob the sporting goods store, Suhr said.
It is not known why the gunman went to the construction site, a replacement building for nearby St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco's Mission District. Suhr said responding officers heard gunfire and saw the gunman pointing his rifle at the hospital.[[346922922, C]]
Once the suspect saw the officers he pointed the rifle toward them, according to Suhr. Three officers then shot at the gunman, who was later pronounced dead, Suhr said.
Officers also used flash-bang to help neutralize the gunman.
A shelter-in-place was ordered at the hospital while police responded to the scene.
Witnesses said the man was armed with a shotgun and a handgun. Witnesses also said the gunman climbed a construction scaffolding to get to the top of the building and began shooting.

Police first responded to reports of a gunman at the hospital construction area at Cesar Chavez and Valencia streets at 4:15 p.m. A SWAT team was called to the area and police shut down nearby streets during the investigation.
San Bruno police said the armed robbery at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store occurred at 3:51 p.m.
Police said the gunman's identity will not be released until next of kin have been notified. His motive is also part of the investigation.
Officials said no one else was injured in the incident.
The construction site will become a replacement hospital for St. Luke's and is expected to be completed by 2020.[[346293642, C]]
