Salmonella Fears Prompt Egg Recall

Some eggs produced at Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, may be contaminated with salmonella, a food-borne bacteria.

A nationwide egg recall is now under way after confirmed illnesses. State health officials say tainted eggs have sickened at least 266 Californians and seven in Minnesota.

Eggs are packaged under the following brand names:  Lucerne (sold by Safeway), Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp. They are packaged under the plant numbers 1026, 1413 and 1946. They also include date numbers from 136 to 225, indicating sell-by dates between May 16, 2010 to Aug 13.

Safeway says the eggs that were contaminated were only distributed in Northern California. No other Safeway locations received any of the eggs from this particular farm.

Consumers should return the eggs to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
