Two people died and three others were injured in a stabbing attack Sunday night at a church near the San Jose State University campus, according to San Jose police.
The attack occurred at Grace Baptist Church, at 484 E. San Fernando St., near the downtown San Jose campus. Officers responded about 8 p.m. Sunday on the report of a stabbing, police said.
A man was taken into custody, police said. The motive and other circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation.
One of the victims, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A woman died at a local hospital. The three other victims, all men, were taken to local hospitals where they remain in serious but stable condition.
There were no services going on at the church at the time, but people without homes had been brought into the church to get them out of the cold, police said.
"From what I understand, everyone that's involved...are somehow associated to the unhoused program they have here at the church," Sgt. Christian Camarillo said.
Several streets around the area remained closed Monday morning, and police advised motorists to use alternate routes.
