The largest timed Thanksgiving road race in the country is taking place Thursday in Silicon Valley, organizers say.
The 15th annual Applied Materials Silicon Valley Turkey Trot started at 7:30 a.m. in San Jose with an elite women's five-kilometer race.
According to the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation, which produced and founded the event, 23,000 people will participate.
Organizers hope to raise $1 million to help the needy in the area.
In the last 14 years, organizers have been able to donate $8.7 million to regional charities.
The general 5K/10K participation race started at 8:30 a.m.
