Sandra's Mother Speaks Out

The mother of an 8-year-old California girl whose killer was sentenced to life in prison says she thought the punishment was enough.

Maria Chavez is the mother of Sandra Cantu, whose body was found in a suitcase last April. A Sunday school teacher, Melissa Huckaby, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering her and was sentenced in a Stockton courtroom Monday.

Chavez said on the "Today" show this morning that she "can't forgive somebody that took my little girl from me."

She says she found no comfort in Huckaby's apology and says it's "difficult to understand" why she killed Sandra.

Chavez had asked that court records in the case remain under seal, but the judge has ordered the release of the search warrants and grand jury transcripts this week. The family's lawyer is considering an appeal of that order.  For now, the gag rule remains in place.
