Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday said that guards at the South San Jose PG&E substation saw a suspicious man walking near their property, and they are now seeking his whereabouts.
Spokesman Kurtis Stenderup said guards on routine patrol spotted the man, who was wearing all black, about 3 a.m. He was walking in a field in the southwest corner of the substation on Coyote Ranch Road. When they shined a flashlight at him, Stenderup, said he ran.
Authorities are on high alert because this is the same substation that was vandalized in April. A transformer at a the same substation on Metcalf Road and Monterey Highway was vandalized, most likely damaged by gunfire.
Sheriff Laurie Smith said the act in April was one of "sabotage."
PG&E is paying a sheriff's deputy to help its guards be on the lookout.
