Santa Cruz Mountain Fire Out

Firefighters reached full containment of the Loma Fire, which burned approximately 485 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains Tuesday night, according to Cal Fire.

The blaze started at about 3 a.m. Sunday in the area of Summit and  Mount Madonna roads.

Division Chief David Shew said it was initially thought that the blaze had burned 600 acres, but that more exact mapping done later Monday  showed the fire had consumed only about 485 acres.

The fire prompted some evacuations, but all residents were allowed to return to their homes by Monday afternoon. All roads affected by the fire were reopened today and the fire was fully contained as of 6 p.m., according  to Cal Fire.

Four firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze, Battalion Chief Jim Crawford said.

The fire burned one trailer and two outbuildings.

Crawford could not confirm reports that a controlled burn may have sparked the wildfire. He said a team of investigators is exploring all  possibilities.

The Loma Fire burned in the same area as the 2008 Summit Fire, which ripped through the Santa Cruz Mountains in May and June of that year, burning 35 homes and charring 4,200 acres
