Authorities on Wednesday were investigating a deadly crash on Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale.

One person died and others were injured in a fiery crash on Lawrence Expressway in Sunnyvale Wednesday evening, officials said.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) suspects speed played a role in the multi-vehicle wreck, which happened at about 5:07 p.m. near Lochinvar Avenue.

First responders found one of the vehicles on its roof and engulfed in flames, DPS said. The driver was still trapped inside.

Emergency personnel tried to pull the driver out of the vehicle but were unsuccessful due to the flames, according to DPS. The driver was later pronounced dead.

Three other vehicles were involved in the collision. The people in those vehicles suffered minor injuries, DPS said.

Lawrence Expressway was shut down between Benton Street and Homestead Road for several hours while authorities conducted an investigation.
