As San Jose police search for suspects in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old boy at Santana Row Friday night, details about the victim continue to surface.

A GoFundMe effort that appears to be from the boy's family said he was attacked by a group of juveniles while on a date with his girlfriend to celebrate Valentine’s Day. During the attack, he was beaten and then stabbed in the heart, according to the GoFundMe.

Gladiators Boxing Gym in Redwood City said the victim was a young boxer there, writing on social media, "He was more than just a fighter—he was family, full of heart, determination, and a bright future ahead."

Berto Barrita said he had been training the 15-year-old victim for two years at the Gladiators Boxing Gym.

“He knew what he was doing. He was a fast learner,” he said. “I’d teach him. Sometimes, I’d have him help me run the kids class.”

Gladiators Boxing Gym teaches young children and teenagers the fundamentals about boxing, discipline and respect. Barrita said it’s meant to be a safe space where they can express themselves, something he felt the 15-year-old could do.

“His character, he was a funny kid, he had chill vibes, he was outgoing; a friendly kid, a friendly, peaceful kid,” he said. “He reminded me of myself when I was young. That’s why I think me and him really got along.”

They have asked for the community to support his family with funeral expenses during this difficult time.

“We just wanted to help and support the family; we know they’re going through a tough time. And the community as well, they lost a young and great kid,” Barrita said.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan released the following statement on Monday:

“As we await more details about this tragic death, my thoughts are with the victim’s family, who are undoubtedly reeling from this horrific loss. I have full confidence that our police officers will pursue every lead to bring the perpetrator of this senseless violence to justice.”

Police said the attackers fled Santana Row, and officers have not yet found them.

Police have not confirmed the number of people involved or whether they were also juveniles.
