2-alarm fire burns in hills east of San Jose

NBC Universal, Inc. Crews with the San Jose Fire Department and Cal Fire battled a blaze in San Jose on Higuera Road that prompted a second-alarm response. Jocelyn Moran reports.

Firefighters battled a fire burning in the hills east of San Jose Monday afternoon.

The San Jose Fire Department reported the blaze prompted a second-alarm response on Higuera Road. Structures involved in the fire are outbuildings, not homes, firefighters said.

“Suddenly I see in the back of my property, it was black smoke out of there, and I immediately vacated my property and ran down,” Sunita Singh said.

Firefighters said the fire burned a garage housing several cars.

One person was taken to the hospital.

The blaze was under control by 6:18 p.m., firefighters said.

With the increase in temperatures, training and collaboration between agencies is proving to be pivotal.

“Making sure that our firefighters are training and are acclimated to the weather is very key,” Chelsea Burkett of Cal Fire said.

Cal Fire Santa Clara covers five Bay Area regions including the South Bay, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The last couple of weeks have been busy for crews, including tackling the 14,000-acre Corral Fire and the fire in Pittsburg on Sunday.

This week, Cal Fire is increasing its staffing.

“It's based on whatever incidents that we’re having, we’ve seen quite an increase in fire activity recently, but it’s also based on weather forecasts and what we’re looking at going forward,” Burkett said.
