A brush fire that broke out in the hills east of San Jose Thursday afternoon scorched at least 66 acres, fire officials said.
Forward progress was stopped early Friday on the Clayton Fire, which ignited at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of Clayton Road and Via De La Vista, according to Cal Fire. About 66 acres had burned as of Friday morning, and crews had about 60% containment.
Structures were threatened for some time, and about 30 homes around 3 Springs Road off Mount Hamilton Road were issued an evacuation warning.
"Make sure you’re aware there’s going to be a lot of moving equipment in and out of the area, keep your head on a swivel and try to be safe," said Chelsea Burkett of Cal Fire Santa Clara.
Many residents said they were worried about their animals. Raymundo Areola said he left work as soon as he heard to check on his horse who was boarded there.
"Thanks to the firefighters he’s alive, and I’m just thanking them for being here for them," he said.

While firefighters worked, they warned fire season is far from over.
"It's not about if, it's when and its really important for us and the communities around us to be prepared and vigilant," said Burkett.
