CHP Officer Struck by Vehicle on Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains

Northbound Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains was shut down for several hours Tuesday after a California Highway Patrol officer was struck by a vehicle while working to clear a crash, the CHP said.

The collision, which left the officer with non-life-threatening injuries, happened at about 12:34 p.m. near Redwood Estates, according to the CHP.

The officer was trying to clear a wreck on the northbound side of the highway when a driver, also traveling northbound, lost control and veered off the roadway, striking the officer and their vehicle. The officer was transported to the hospital, the CHP said.

One person in the vehicle that struck the officer was also taken to the hospital, according to the CHP.

Northbound lanes reopened just after 6 p.m., the CHP said.
