Morgan Hill police on Wednesday were investigating the city's first homicide of the year after a man was shot and killed, the department said.
The deadly shooting happened at about 7:11 a.m. on the 100 block of Tennant Avenue, police said.
Responding officers found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his torso, police said. Officers tried to save the victim, but he died at the scene.
As officers were tending to the victim, witnesses identified the suspect, who was walking in the area, police said.
Officers took the suspect – 30-year-old Jesus Garcia of Morgan Hill – into custody without incident, according to police.
The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office at a later date, police said.
Investigators said the two men knew each other.

"This is not gang related, this is not a robbery gone bad," Morgan Hill police Sgt. Scott Purvis said. "There was some sort of disturbance between the two of them. At this point in time, we’re still investigating exactly what transpired between the two subjects."
While the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are being investigated, police said there was no active threat to the community.
