Palo Alto City Council votes to keep parts of California Avenue closed off to cars

NBC Universal, Inc. Palo Alto city leaders voted 5-to-2 to keep a few blocks of California Avenue closed for another year.

In a 5-2 vote Monday night, Palo Alto city leaders agreed to keep a few blocks of California Avenue closed for another year.

It’s been closed off to cars for three years for outdoor dining that became popular during the pandemic.

Many restaurant owners wanted it to remain closed because it draws in diners who like eating outdoors.

Other businesses had asked for a compromise, to at least open one lane, until a study could be done on how to improve visibility for all businesses.

The manager of Zareen’s Restaurant wanted to keep it closed.

Al fresco dining in the street became the norm during the pandemic, and while many cities reverted back to opening those streets to cars – one street in Palo Alto is still shut down. The city will decide whether or not to reopen it Monday night. Ian Cull reports.

“It’s way easier for the businesses here. So many people can come out here and they like the vibe outside, and they often tell us ‘this is really nice, the outdoor seating,’” said Vyas.

Five different businesses penned an op-ed for the Palo Alto Online, noting some businesses have left the avenue.

Most of the businesses behind the opinion piece were closed Monday and couldn’t be reached for comment.

Two friends were walking in the area to research the issue for themselves.

“I really enjoy being able to stroll around so I think it’s a good thing,” said Deb Stapleton of Palo Alto.

“I think the idea of having one lane where a car could drop off a person who couldn’t walk the whole distance would be a lovely idea,” said Libby Roth of Palo Alto.
