Suspects use hammers in smash-and-grab robbery at Concord's Sunvalley mall

NBC Universal, Inc.

Police are investigating a smash-and-grab robbery at the Sunvalley Shopping Center in Concord.

The incident was reported at about 6:10 p.m. Monday at Valliani Jewelers inside the mall. Police said several suspects wearing hoods and masks, and carrying hammers, entered the store. The suspects used the tools to break glass display cases and take jewelry

The suspects left the mall in two vehicles and no injuries were reported in the incident, police said.

Valliani Jewelers reopened Tuesday with a guard in front of the store.

Shoppers told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday it’s a scary start to the holiday shopping season, and it’s supposed to be a fun and festive time but now many are fearful.

“They have to do something to stop that one because I’ve been so scared,” said shopper Daisy Molina.

Some shoppers added they have personally witnessed recent smash and grabs in other parts of the county and they say it’s happening all too often.

“I honestly was just shocked I didn’t expect it to happen. We were just casually shopping and these guys just came in and started bagging up as much stuff as possible,” said shopper Taleiya.

Concord police say they are stepping up patrols at shopping centers across the city during the holidays. They are urging shoppers to take precautions and be aware. They added that if you witness a smash grab stay out of danger but be a good witness.

An investigation is ongoing.

Police urge anyone with information about the robbery to contact Detective Justin Wilson at 925-603-5859.
