Residents told NBC Bay Area that they heard several shots fired at around 4 p.m. Sunday. San Jose resident Dante Avila said the shooting happened near his apartment.

"It’s a little concerning because they're both little girls and we are constantly taking walks. It’s a little alarming to know that it happened here," he said.

Pablo Soto of San Jose said that police were focused on a gray minivan with flat tires and broken windows. He added that he saw a chaotic scene when he arrived in the area.

“We just the cops running up inside the building and outside on the street. Just running everywhere,” he said.

As of Sunday night, some residents in the area said they were waiting for hours to get back into their homes. But a few opted to stay with other family members for the night.
