A stretch of Byron Highway in Contra Costa County was shut down Friday night after a fatal crash involving a big-rig and a car, according to a California Highway Patrol dispatcher.
Two people died in the crash, NBC Bay Area reported.
A young boy in the back seat of the car and the car's driver were killed. The truck driver was not hurt.
He was driving from Tracy to Antioch.
The CHP says a truck driven by a 62-year-old Antioch man noticed traffic slowing on the southbound side of the road when the driver said he saw a blue Oldsmobile sedan lose control and veer into the northbound lane before it smashed into the truck.
This happened on Byron Highway at Clifton Court Road in an unincorporated area near the Byron Airport. The collision was reported at 3:20 p.m., according to the CHP.
The crash also caused a diesel spill, and Caltrans crews were called to the scene, according to the CHP.
Local
The CHP issued a Sig-alert around 3:50 p.m. and completely shut down Byron Highway over the California Aqueduct.
Traffic was mounting near the scene Friday evening, and CHP officials say there is no estimated time for reopening.
