SUTTER'S FORT STATE HISTORIC PARK... gives visitors a peek back at an earlier day in our state's story on most days, but come a special weekend around Halloween? It isn't so much about the history of the Sacramento-based destination as the hauntstory. When October arrives, though, and the end of the month draws near, the centuries-old fort dons a different sort of vibe, one that is meant to inspire a few chills. It's The Haunted Fort, a presentation from California State Parks and B Street Theatre Company, and it is arriving in 2017 with "...an enhanced and family-friendly format." FRIDAY, OCT. 27 AND SATURDAY, OCT. 28, and visitors will be invited into the walled landmark from 6:30 to 9 p.m., right when the night is getting mighty gloamy. That's when you'll spy docents in period costumes, and, if you listen closely, you'll be able to hear their tales of pioneer life, including those details that are "...scary, spooky, and sometimes disturbing..." Also on the docket? Vignettes that are atmospheric and eerie, performed by the players of the B Street Theatre Company. Anyone of any age may attend, and with each vignette lasting about ten to fifteen minutes, you'll be back out and soaking in the spirited night in no time.
TICKETS... go on sale on Sunday, Oct. 1. An adult admission is ten bucks, while a child's admission is $5, and the history-helping Friends of Sutter's Fort is the beneficiary. Should you be seeking out a dose of history with your Halloween experiences this year, The Haunted Fort might be just the merry and, yes, macabre outing you desire. Dressing as a pioneer? Not needed, though whether you think you see a pioneer of yore inside the Sutter's Fort courtyard is another topic.
