A 23-pound German shepherd that was dropped off at an Inland Empire animal shelter earlier this week is "very emaciated," but "making a great comeback."
The 8-month-old dog was dropped off Monday at Riverside County Animal Services' Jurupa Valley shelter.
"Why someone would allow a dog to get so skinny is beyond our comprehension," Riverside County Animal Services posted on Facebook.
Since receiving treatment including fluids via an IV, the emaciated dog has gained four pounds as of Wednesday.
Veterinarians are confident the pup will "make a great comeback. He "has such a sweet disposition, despite what was done to him," the shelter added.
If the rightful owner does not show up, the dog will eventually be released to a foster or forever home.
