Is Facebook partnering with Spotify and other startups to create a music service for its social network? Rumors say that the new project will be unveiled at Facebook's f8 annual developer conference held in August.
Facebook will be launching new music service with a Music tab and music dashboard, according to GigaOm. It will also keep track of what was played and top tracks. From the report:
The Music Dashboard will have the following features:
1.Music Notifications: here you have notifications that show if your friends have listened to songs recommended by you or on your profile.
2.Recommended Songs: You can get a list of songs heard and recommended by your friends. You can also play them back by clicking the play icon.
3.Top Songs from friends.
4.Top Albums from friends, with cover art.
5.Recent listens from your friends.
6.In the upper-right corner there will be a “happening now” ticker that shows what is happening in your social and musical universe, including songs that your friends are playing. There is some talk that this “Happening Now ticker” would show-up all throughout your music experience and not just on the music dashboard.
Is Facebook taking on Apple in this latest move? Rumors about Facebook's Project Spartan taking on the App Store have been swirling. This latest rumor means that Facebook could also be ready for a full-scale assault on iTunes. And can Facebook succeed where Apple's Ping failed? If so, it would be a tremendous coup for the social network and a sign that Apple can't compete in social media against Zuckerberg's company.
Perhaps with Apple being so preoccupied with Android and patent infringement lawsuits, it failed to see how Facebook could actually be the bigger threat.
