A Syrian refugee set fire to the German shelter where he was living and painted swastikas in an effort to frame neo-Nazis, NBC News reported.
A total of 26 people were in the building when the fire was set Thursday in the western city of Bingen. Two firefighters and four residents suffered minor injuries.
The 26-year-old alleged arsonist was upset with overcrowding at the center, investigators said.
"During police questioning, the man admitted that he had set fire in the cellar of the multi-use building," police spokesman Achim Hansen told NBC News, adding that the Syrian suspect had also said "he had a lack of hope for the future."
