49er Stadium Groundbreaking Date Set

The reality for fans who still hoped for the team to stay in San Francisco will come to an end in a matter of days as construction begins.

The San Francisco 49ers and the city of Santa Clara have an official date for the "official" groundbreaking for a new professional football stadium.

The shovels will go in the ground sometime between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m on Thursday, April 19.

The new stadium site is adjacent to the Great America Park and right next door to the 49er practice facility on Tasman.

The stadium is estimated to cost approximately $1.2 billion.

If all goes as planned the team will have a pre-season game there in August 2014.

Officials expect it to be a landmark for Silicon Valley in addition to its role as the new home to the San Francisco 49ers.

The 1.85 million square foot facility will seat approximately 68,500.

Team and city officials say because space is limited, only invited media and local dignitaries will be allowed on site.
