A former University of California, Berkeley football player is suing the university for medical malpractice.
The lawsuit stems from concussions Bernard Hicks suffered while playing for the Golden Bears from 2004 to 2008. Hicks said he suffered several concussions and has permanent neurological injuries.
Hicks in the lawsuit accuses UC Berkeley of failing to take measures to prevent concussions and failing to warn players about the long-term consequences of head injuries.
UC Berkeley has responded to the lawsuit and released the following statement on Thursday:
"Our coaches, physicians and medical staff, and everyone involved with Cal athletics, are dedicated to the safety of our student-athletes. While we cannot comment on any student's specific medical history, we were saddened to read the lawsuit's statements about Mr. Hicks' health."
