The 4 Nations Face-Off is underway.

The NHL's midseason international tournament featuring Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States began in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night in Montreal. After Sweden scored a pair of third-period goals against Canada to force overtime, Mitch Marner rescued the Canadians with a game-winning OT score.

Team USA then took the ice for the first time on Thursday against Finland and pulled away late for a 6-1 victory. The Tkachuk brothers, Brady and Matthew, combined for four goals in the win.

Tournament play opens with a round robin in which teams play three games, one against each of the other squads in the field. The top two teams in the standings following the round robin will then meet in the championship game.

The 4 Nations Face-Off, which includes only NHL players, is the first best-on-best international hockey tournament since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. And it comes just one year before the NHL makes its return to the Olympics at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games.
