In a little more than a month, the 49ers will be able to start talking to veteran NFL free agents.
When they do, they’ll have plenty of money to fill out their wish list.
Figures released by the NFL Players Association this week show the 49ers will carry over more than $35 million in salary-cap space from 2018. That is projected to give San Francisco about $60 million in overall cap space this offseason, according to the website, Overthecap.com. That ranks No. 7 in the NFL, behind the Colts (who have a whopping $110 million), Jets, Browns, Bills, Raiders ($71 million) and Texans.
With the money, the 49ers should be able to take care of some of their own players – such as defensive lineman Arik Armstead – and sign some impact players from around the league.
The free-agent negotiation period begins March 11.
“We plan on bringing in some veterans,” 49ers general manager John Lynch said right after this past season. “We plan on drafting a whole new group of young guys. That now puts three years together of getting better and I expect that to show with our record.”
The 49ers finished 4-12, earning the second overall choice in this year’s draft.
