Mike Nolan has joined the Bay Area ranks of the unemployed.
The San Francisco 49ers general manager announced his dismissal Monday, stating the action was taken for "the best interest of the team."
Nolan, who was hired as head coach in January 2005, was asked to step down just one day after the 49ers' 17-29 loss to the New York Giants.
"This decision was difficult because Mike has been both a friend and valued coach of our team," general manager Scot McCloughan said in a statement. "I have a great deal of respect for Mike and his family. But my first obligation is always to do what is in the best interest of our fans and the entire 49ers organization.
"It is for this reason that we've made the decision to give the head coaching role to Mike
Singletary," he said.
Singletary, who has been the team's assistant head coach since 2005, will step in as head coach for the remainder of the season.
"I am confident that Mike Singletary's leadership ability along with his experience as both a Half of Fame player and coach gives him the ability to turn our season around," McCloughan said.

The 49ers are currently third in the National Football Conference West Team with two wins and five losses.
McCloughan and Singletary will hold a news conference at noon Tuesday at the team's facility at 4949 Centennial Blvd., Santa Clara.
