San Jose Sharks, San Jose Agree to SAP Center Lease Extension

The San Jose Sharks and the City of San Jose reached a deal Friday afternoon that would keep the team at the SAP Center for at least another 10 years, and possibly through 2040. Scott Budman reports.

Sharks fans, you're favorite hockey team is here in the South Bay for at least another decade.

The San Jose Sharks and the City of San Jose reached a deal Friday afternoon that would keep the team at the SAP Center for at least another 10 years, and possibly through 2040.

And that will bring lots of fans and business to downtown San Jose for the next 10 years at least.

"I am told sharks are migratory animals, but these sharks are here to stay," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said.

Sharks majority owner Hasso Plattner said he never considered moving as long as the team had a chance to stay in the Silicon Valley.

It's good news for San Jose, which depends on Sharks fans to wine and dine before and after going to the arena.

"We know there's a big impact," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said. "The entire downtown feels it. The city needs revenues for everything from cops to libraries. We love having the sharks here."

And good news for die-hard Bay Area fans, who have stayed with the team through good seasons and lean times.

"This arena is so easy to get to," Sharks broadcaster Dan Rusanowsky said. "Fans from Contra Costa County and Marin County -- it's a great location."

Now that San Jose has scored the team for at least a decade, it's time to bring a Stanley Cup to the South Bay. Plattner said moves are being made to bring the team closer to a championship, which is always good for business.
