US Open Day 2: Latest men's and women's draw results

NBC Universal, Inc.

These are the top seeded players at the 2024 U.S. Open competing in men’s and women’s singles.

The second day of competition at the U.S. Open tournament is in the books. While there were no major upsets, some of the top seeded players did face challenges in their first round matches.

No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz had a bit of stumble in the second set of his first round match, but still managed to defeat qualifier Li Tu of Australia in four sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The 21-year-old Spaniard is looking to win his third consecutive grand slam this season, following victories at Wimbledon and the French Open this summer. Alcaraz was bested by Novak Djokovic at the 2024 Paris Olympics final, settling for silver.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek fought through a tough first-round match. Swiatek edged Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 7-6 (6). The 2022 champion was one point away from being forced to a third set when Rakhimova took a 6-3 lead in the tiebreaker. But Swiatek recovered and won the next five points, finishing the match when her opponent missed a backhand.

Naomi Osaka defeated Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets at the U.S. Open for her first victory over a top-10 opponent in more than four years. Osaka is a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows but has missed time in recent seasons because of mental health breaks and while having a baby. Her victory over 2017 French Open winner Ostapenko marked the first opening-round matchup at the U.S. Open between two past Grand Slam champs since Serena Williams eliminated Maria Sharapova five years ago.

Jannik Sinner overcame a poor start at the U.S. Open and won his first match since news of his doping case emerged a week ago. If there were boos at Arthur Ashe Stadium when he was introduced Tuesday, they were imperceptible. Sinner pulled away for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Mackie McDonald of the United States to reach the second round at Flushing Meadows. There were no apparent signs in the stands or disparaging shouts making reference to what no one knew about for months: Sinner tested positive twice for trace amounts of the anabolic steroid Clostebol in an eight-day span in March.

Here's a look at who else advanced and who didn't at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday. (For Day 1 results click here.)
