Who Runs the Media? Silicon Valley, Says TV News Announcer

Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page top list stocked with Bay Area notables

In a list for Forbes, CBS Evening News host Katie Couric selected a number of business people as the most powerful in media.

And it's stocked with folks from San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

At the top of the list are Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page -- which may explain why News Corp. honcho Rupert Murdoch hates the Mountain View company so much.

In fact, Murdoch didn't even make the list, but people who did include Biz Stone and Ev Williams of Twitter, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, BlogHer trio Lisa Stone, Elisa Camahort Page and Jory Des Jardins,  and Craigslist's Craig Newmark.

In fact, no one from New York -- home to countless networks and publishing houses -- even made the list.

Just how powerful are these companies? So powerful, a number of them have sent representatives to the Vatican to hang out with Pope Benedict XVI, who carries an iPhone and will probably start tweeting recriminations at sinners who use birth control.

So while your mortgage might be underwater or a full-time job seeming a distant dream, rest assured that you are now living in the new media capital of the world.

Also: Suck it, New York.

Jackson West thinks the most powerful people in media are a bunch of nerds, and that's coming from a nerd.
