A dense fog advisory was extended into Thursday for much of the Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service, and the lingering fog prompted temporary ground stops at local airports on Wednesday.

Initially, the advisory was in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday but was extended twice -- first to 11 a.m. then to 1 p.m., the weather service said.

Ground stops were issued for San Jose Mineta International Airport and Oakland International Airport due to "low ceilings," according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The ground stops were lifted just after 10 a.m.

Chief Meteorologist Jeff Ranieri has the latest on morning fog. Plus, rain chances into early next week in your 7 day Microclimate Forecast.

Visibility was expected to be a quarter-mile or less in some places, resulting in hazardous driving conditions, especially during the morning commute, the weather service said.

The dense fog advisory was in effect for the North Bay, San Francisco County, the San Francisco Bay shoreline, Santa Clara Valley and East Bay interior valleys.

The weather service advises drivers to slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of space between their vehicle and vehicles in front of them.
