Evacuations Ordered in Parts of Santa Cruz County, Landslide Closes Highway 17

NBC Universal, Inc. The latest in a parade of storms arrived in the Bay Area overnight Monday, packing a punch, with moderate to heavy rain, strong wind gusts and the danger of flooding in several parts of the region. Bob Redell, Emma Goss, Kari Hall and Mike Inouye report.

Heavy rains and runoff prompted a flash flood warning and an evacuation order for parts of Santa Cruz County on Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service and the sheriff's office.

The levels of the San Lorenzo River and Soquel Creek were rising rapidly due to intense rainfall, the sheriff's office said. An evacuation order means people should leave immediately, the sheriff's office said.

People in the following areas should evacuate immediately and move to higher ground. Evacuation orders as of 10:15 a.m. Monday:

  • Corralitos/Salsipuedes Creeks (Holohan Rd/E. Lake Ave) PAJ-E026
  • Salsipuedes Creeks (College Rd) PAJ-E027

  • Salsipuedes Creeks (Riverside) PAJ-E029

People in the following areas should evacuate immediately and move to higher ground. Evacuation order as of 7 a.m. Monday:

Also in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a landslide blocked most of Highway 17 south of Glenwood Drive. Initially, all northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 17 were blocked at Glenwood Drive, south of the summit. Later, the right lane reopened in the northbound direction, and just before 10 p.m., all southbound lanes reopened.

Meteorologist Kari Hall has an update on the next storm moving into the Bay Area and flood threats in the Microclimate Forecast.

Elsewhere in the county, the intersection at Graham Hill and Mount Hermon roads in the city of Santa Cruz was shut down due to flooding, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP advised drivers to not attempt to drive through any standing water as they performed several rescues during the morning.
