bay area weather

Forecast: Significant heat ahead and fire danger

NBC Universal, Inc.

SUNDAY: Strong high-pressure building into the region to start the week will rewind our calendars to July where temps are concerned. In fact, for bayside communities, we may see the hottest temps of the year and possibly the last two years for San Francisco.

As high pressure builds in, higher elevations mainly above 2,000 feet will see dry, gusty offshore wind warranting some localized power safety shut-offs by PG&E.

Also keep in mind, utility infrastructure will be stressed as temps rise above 100 inland so “unplanned” outage are possible as well, consider backup cooling measures just in case.  We could see impacts to public transit as well, including BART where high temps can lead to track expansion and heating issues where trains and systems may need to reduce speed and capacity.

Monday’s highs will be in the 80s-90s bayside with 90s and a few 100s possible inland. However the hottest days of the week should be Tuesday and Wednesday where even San Francisco and Oakland could make a run at the mid 90s and some 100s nearby.  This will bring a high risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions including the elderly and children in region without access to air-conditioning.

Minor cooling begins Thursday, but valleys likely hang on to 90s and 100s, so the current heat advisory may see an extension so stay tuned for that.

Air quality issues will be around as well with a Spare the Air alert for Monday and likely ongoing to midweek as high pressure remains locked in over the region.
